Prenatal Massage
Pregnancy brings tremendous changes to the body, and prenatal massage can offer a welcome opportunity to rest, reduce tension and feel more comfortable as your body changes. My interest in prenatal massage began many years ago while I was working in spas in NYC. I regularly heard pregnant clients say that their massages felt too light or that their massage therapist seemed hesitant or afraid to work with them.
Those conversations stayed with me, and interestingly, more than 20 years later, I still hear similar experiences from new clients. Some arrive disappointed after a previous prenatal massage because the pressure was much lighter than they wanted or they felt they didn't receive the kind of massage they were hoping for.I wanted to better understand the changing pregnant body and learn how to provide massage that feels both comfortable and confident. I pursued specialized training in prenatal massage, and it has since become one of the central parts of my practice.
Prenatal massage doesn't automatically mean very light massage. Pressure and technique can be adapted to your preferences, your stage of pregnancy and what feels comfortable in your body. As with all of my work, communication is important. I encourage you to tell me if you would like more or less pressure or if anything doesn't feel comfortable.
Over the years, I've developed extensive experience with positioning during pregnancy, including supported face-down, side-lying and semi-reclined options. Positioning is always based on your stage of pregnancy, comfort and individual needs.
For many clients, being comfortably supported face-down is one of the most surprising parts of the experience. Some clients have described the supported positioning as feeling “weightless,” or said that for a little while they almost forgot they were pregnant.
After more than 20 years as a massage therapist, I still approach every prenatal session individually. Pregnancy is different for every person, and your massage should be too..
Prenatal Massage in NYC's Financial District
EarthySoul is my private massage therapy practice in New York City's Financial District, with prenatal massage at the heart of my work for more than 20 years.
Pregnancy can bring changes in the lower back, hips, legs, shoulders and other areas of the body. Your prenatal massage is tailored to how you're feeling that day, with pressure and techniques adjusted to your comfort and preferences.
Comfortable Positioning During Pregnancy
One of the things clients often ask about is positioning. Depending on your stage of pregnancy and what feels best for you, your massage may include supported face-down positioning, side-lying or semi-reclined positioning.
For face-down massage, I use a specialized pregnancy cushion system designed to comfortably support the changing body without placing unnecessary pressure on the abdomen. Clients have described the experience as feeling "weightless" or "like floating," and some have told me that for a little while, they almost forgot they were pregnant.
Throughout your session, I encourage you to let me know how the positioning and pressure feel. I'm not on your side of the skin, so you are the only person who can tell me exactly what you're experiencing. Your comfort and communication are an important part of the session.
